Care

Have you ever bought a beautiful new piece of clothing or a little accessory for your child and then found yourself unsure how exactly to care for it so it keeps its colour, shape, and softness just like on the very first day? We’ve been there too. And that’s exactly why we decided to gather a few practical and truly helpful tips in one place — to support every parent in taking good care of the items their children love so much.

For us at AIA + GAIA, caring for a product is far more than simply “how to wash it” or “how to dry it.” It is an extension of our philosophy — a philosophy rooted in respect: respect for nature, for the people whose hands created the fabrics, for the children who wear them, and for the Earth from which every fibre begins its journey. We work exclusively with high-quality organic and recycled materials. These fabrics have a naturally longer life cycle, they age beautifully, and they hold their softness and colour over time. But to remain the way we love them, they need a little mindful attention.

The ritual of washing - gentle, conscious, respectful of the fabric

Washing is something we often do on autopilot, but it can easily become a small everyday act of sustainability. Natural fibres appreciate gentle treatment. Washing clothes at low temperatures — around 30°C — with mild detergents free of harsh chemicals helps each piece keep its softness, its vibrant colour, and its shape. Sometimes a garment doesn’t need a wash at all — just a bit of fresh air. Airing out clothes extends their life, reduces water and energy consumption, and protects the “health” of our planet.

Natural detergents - the quiet protectors of fabric

The detergent you choose matters just as much as the washing temperature. Strongly perfumed products or those containing bleach can damage natural fibres, making them rougher and less durable. That’s why eco-friendly, gentle detergents are the best choice - they preserve the fabric’s true texture: clean, soft, and natural. Fabric softeners, though pleasant to the senses, coat fibres with a thin layer that prevents them from breathing, causing them to wear out more quickly. Our organic materials simply don’t need that - their softness is genuine.

Drying - the slow art of patience

Drying plays a huge role in the overall care of a garment. We all know how quick and convenient a dryer can be, but high heat shortens a fabric’s lifespan and often causes unwanted shrinkage. The most caring choice is air drying - on a balcony, near a window, or on a drying rack, away from direct sunlight, which can fade colors over time. When clothes dry naturally, the fibres relax, regain their structure, and feel even more pleasant to the touch. If a garment does need ironing afterward, a gentle, low-temperature press from the inside out will protect prints, embroidery, and illustrations.

Protecting clothing from mechanical friction

Something we often overlook is mechanical friction. Sometimes clothing suffers from contact with Velcro, rough surfaces, metal buckles on backpacks, or stroller seats. The more we protect the fabric from sharp or abrasive textures, the longer it will keep its beautiful appearance. And if a small tear or loose thread appears, don’t rush to part with the item. A few careful stitches can bring a hoodie or T-shirt back to life. This is the essence of sustainability - not constantly replacing things, but repairing and preserving them.

Caring for our accessories — gentle, thoughtful, and never in the washing machine

Many families choose AIA + GAIA for our backpacks as well — those little companions that follow children everywhere: to kindergarten, on trips, on walks, or on tiny daily adventures.

Our backpacks, made from recycled materials, are designed to be durable, practical, and comfortable, yet they too have their own preferences. And the most important one: they do not like washing machines. Machine washing can distort their shape, damage details, or compromise their structure. The best method is spot cleaning with a soft cloth, lukewarm water, and a gentle soap.

The fabric responds beautifully to careful treatment, and stains lift without the need for harsh scrubbing. After cleaning, the backpack should be left to air dry, in a well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. A dryer is not suitable - it can damage the material and shorten the product’s lifespan.

When the backpack isn’t in use, it prefers to have a little breathing space - stored in a dry place, without heavy items placed on top. Adding a soft cloth or a bit of padding inside helps maintain its shape even better. And just like with clothing, small repairs can extend its life significantly. If a seam loosens or a corner begins to wear, a simple fix can help the backpack serve your child for a long time.

One of our core ideas is that our products should live long lives - not just because of their quality, but because of the choices we make. When your child outgrows their favourite rhino sweatshirt or their woodpecker hoodie, keep it for the next little one in the family, pass it to a friend, or donate it. That is the true magic of sustainability - extending the story of each item.

All these actions and habits are small, yet deeply meaningful. Every garment or backpack that stays in use for longer means less waste, less production, and a lighter footprint on nature. And our example teaches our children respect and care for the world around them - from the youngest age.
